Artist Statement
Through creating with clay, I have found my passion for pieces that spark whimsy, wonder, and especially the imagination. I seek to hold captive that childlike sense of wonder and hope my pieces may re-awaken some in viewers as well. As I’m exploring my style, my current body of work is comprised of both ceramic sculptural houses and functional dishware that have fun colours, patterns, textures, and fine details. A combination of purposeful play and detailed designing make up my creative process. I love the versatility of clay and so work both on the potter’s wheel and by hand with slabs of clay, depending on the idea!
Artist Biography
Before settling onto ceramics, Katie grew up creating in various ways, from drawings and paintings to stories and music. Her family tree includes jewelry makers, painters, seamstresses, and dollhouse makers, and she has fond memories of playing with the intricate dollhouses her mother would build.
Her introduction into clay began in 2016 as a freshman in high school. Her interest grew, and she continued to take ceramic and art classes until graduation in 2019. Throughout school she had her drawings, paintings, and ceramic creations in student exhibitions in the Lake Country and Kelowna Art Galleries.
In 2020, she attended Kootenay’s School of the Arts Ceramics Program in Nelson, which further solidified her passion for the medium and grew her skills as a ceramic artist. Katie now creates in Lake Country, with continued exploration in abstract designs, complimented with lots of mini houses.
